Immunosuppressive therapy for active lymphocytic myocarditis: virological and immunologic profile of responders versus nonresponders.

BACKGROUND The beneficial effect of immunosuppressive treatment on myocarditis is still controversial, possibly because the immunologic and virological profile of potential candidates is largely unknown. METHODS AND RESULTS Out of 652 biopsied patients, 112 had a histological diagnosis of active lymphocytic myocarditis; 41 of these 112 patients were characterized by progressive heart failure ...

Respiratory Syncytial Virus Associated Myocarditis Requiring Venoarterial Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation

Severe fulminant myocarditis causing cardiogenic shock can be a rapidly progressing, life threatening condition. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a very rare infectious culprit infrequently described in medical literature as a cause of myocarditis, particularly in adults. We present a case of acute fulminant myocarditis in a patient with PCR positive RSV infection requiring venoarterial ext...

Immunosuppressive therapy in myocarditis.

Although there is general agreement on the favorable effect of immunosuppression in eosinophilic, granulomatous, giant-cell myocarditis and in lymphocytic myocarditis associated with connective tissue disorders and with rejection of a transplanted heart, its therapeutic role in lymphocytic inflammatory cardiomyopathy (ICM) is still debated. Previous retrospective studies reported a relevant cli...

Human parvovirus B19 infection in infancy associated with acute and chronic lymphocytic myocarditis and high cytokine levels: report of 3 cases and review.

Human parvovirus B19 infection is occasionally associated with acute lymphocytic myocarditis (ALM). Three infants with B19 virus-associated ALM were followed up clinically, histologically, and immunovirologically. Each infant had B19 virus DNA in the blood or B19 virus-specific IgM antibodies. Two infants with postnatal infection recovered after immunosuppressive therapy. The third infant with ...

Fulminant and acute lymphocytic myocarditis: the prognostic value of clinicopathological classification.

Myocarditis, characterized by myocardial inflammation, may lead to left ventricular dysfunction, heart failure, arrhythmias, conduction system disorders, and sudden death. While lymphocytic infiltration is most common, both eosinophilic and giant cell myocarditis are recognized entities. Lymphocytic myocarditis may result from systemic endocrinological, rheumatological, or toxic disorders; but ...
